i have done extensive reading and i actually read the entirety of his comics instead of just reading about them out of context.and it’s starting to become personally offensive that some how there is an assumption that I haven’t actually read his comics because I don’t know about one specific strip that concerns rape. how about you try reading about the counter culture movement in comics and get back to me. the racist and misogynistic comics are supposed to be social/ political commentary/critique. Which means the artist is trying to draw attention to the fact that issue even exists at all and its a rejection of the “dont ask dont tell” policy. a lot of what crumb is playing off is freuds views on the oppression of sexual desire. which is to say if you dont express yourself completely sexually you will eventually cause major psychological damage to yourself and future generations. He lived during a time in America when it was not okay to have any kind of deviant thought about sex whatsoever and he was lashing out against this norm. Even with all this said, I still haven’t even proven a well-rounded point. Because when all is said and done any feminist worth her salt would say, the support of misogyny in any form, historically or current is inexcusable. and I agree with this. The point is that art, has to be taken into consideration with the movement and the artist’s overall statement/intention. Crumb glorified many blues artists and women and I think that his intention was more clearly to expose social hypocrisy and not condone it. And if someone has to shock the shit out of people in order to bring attention to the hypocrisy that exists in our society then I’m okay with that. I accept that some people aren’t ok with it and I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind on the issue. But don’t criticize me like I’m some apathetic idly supportive fan because it’s not true.
